Lara Logan was sexually assaulted and beaten by an Egyptian mob on Friday; Logan was rescued by Egyptian women and eventually soldiers. CBS News reporter Lara Logan is currently in the United States recovering, says a news statement issued by her employer today.
Logan had been dispatched Friday by CBS to Tahrir Square. She was in place at the time that Hosni Mubarak stepped down. Logan’s assignment was to cover the celebration of the Egyptian people for the U.S. TV program 60 Minutes.
Logan was sent to Tahrir Square with a production TV crew and a security team. But during their assignment, a mob of two hundred people went after them. During the “crush of the mob”, Logan was separated from her crew. From the statement today, it remains unclear if the mob’s purpose was to kidnap Logan. CBS released the above picture today reportedly taken moments before the assault. In it, she is surrounded by Egyptian males.
Shortly thereafter, terror unfolded. Logan “was surrounded and suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating before being saved by a group of women and an estimated 20 Egyptian soldiers. She reconnected with the CBS team” thereafter. She currently remains hospitalized in the U.S. “
Previously, on or around February 3, Logan was detained by Egyptian police. She also said that she lived in fear while reporting “We were accused of being more than journalists, very frightening suggestions were being made. Suggestions that really could be very dangerous for us.” That Wednesday she also wrote that the army “have absolutely prevented us from filming anywhere today… they were confronted by soldiers and plainclothes agents. They were armed, they were intimidated and bullied and in fact marched at gunpoint through the streets all the way back to our hotel.
